THE HISTORY OF RGBC

A Historical Reflection of God’s Faithfulness

Reservoir Garden Baptist Church (RGBC) was birthed in 1963 through the pioneering efforts of Joseph and Alice Choo. In obedience to the Lord’s calling, they began sowing the seeds of the gospel from a small house at Reservoir Crescent.

In its early days, the work of equipping and building up of the church were the hallmarks of the late ‘60s to mid ‘70s through the focus on prayer, bible teaching, evangelism, and training. The congregation soon grew to 100 strong members comprising mostly of youths, a few married couples and adults.

With the introduction of teachings on the leading of the Holy Spirit in the late ‘70s, RGBC began to adopt a more charismatic approach. The charismatic movement at its fullest brought in a new spiritual dimension to worship, prayer, ministry and releasing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

As the church flourished in the ‘80s, it began to sow outwards towards missions and church planting of various dialects in Sungai Petani, Hillside, Bagan Serai and many others. The church grew ‘til its walls had to be broken for expansion and growth continued throughout the ‘90s. As the church grew, the Cell Church structure was adopted for more effective evangelism and edification.
Changing times led the pastoral team to seek the Lord for a direction and vision for the church. After much prayer, the vision, ‘To be the Antioch Church in the Pearl of the Orient reaching out to Asia and beyond’ was formed along with the four mission statements. As of then, missions and evangelism took on greater importance and RGBC has since sent out many missionaries into the field.
Now, in the new millennium, RGBC looks back in wonder at the great and wondrous work that the Lord has accomplished through the church in the last 40 years. Praise the Lord! Marvelous are His ways and wonderful are His works. He who has led us thus far will continue to lead us on.
